What made Jim Morrison a great frontman?

First and foremost, I'm not knocking him or the doors. I love their music and I think they are one of the best rock bands to ever do it. My question is this. I've seen many, many comments that say that Jim Morrison was one of the greatest frontmen ever, but from all the footage i've seen all he does is just stand there and sing. What made him so great?
